The Scraps We Leave Behind

When the smoke finally thinned, the fox came back to where the world used to be.

Not much was left. A doorframe with no door. A chair that remembered being a tree. The black shapes of things that had once been warm.

But under the ash, something was still holding on. A small heat. A stubborn ember that had refused to go out, the way small things sometimes do.

The fox curled around it. And for a while, that was enough.

This is the part no one paints. Not the fire. The after. The quiet work of the ones who stay behind and tend what's left, who find warmth in the broken places and decide it is worth keeping.

We are the shepherds of this world. Of every quiet soul in it, the ones with names and the ones without.

When we are gone, what remains is memory. And memory will speak of how we tended this place. Of the small fires we kept lit for each other. Of the love that grew, even here, even now, up through the cracks.
